Off to see Chris Rock tonight

My friend was lucky enough to pick up some tickets to see Chris Rock tonight in Edinburgh. He’s one of the best comedians in years in my opinion so I was really excited when I got a ticket.

Chris Rock

I’m curious as to how different the show will be compared to his performances in the USA. He talks a lot about racial problems and politics etc in the USA so it will be good to see how he changes it for a UK audience. Of course, racial problems exist in the UK too and theres plenty of material for him in UK politics but I reckon he’ll mix things up a little.

Regardless, I’m sure it’s gonna be a great show :)

Boot & run Linux easily using a USB Flash Drive

Following on from a suggestion from Eric Odom, I have installed Ubuntu as a second operating system on my new portable laptop. I encourage you all to try using Linux at one point. Years ago Linux users were not catered for by software designers but most scripts now cater for windows, mac and linux users so it isn’t so much of a problem.

Boot & run Linux easily using a USB Flash Drive

I found a good little site the other day called PenDriveLinux. The site has loads of tutorials on how you can boot from a USB flash drive. You can run linux through your flash drive however I decided to create a new partition to install it in. Most linux sites have tutorials showing you how you can install without using a cd however I found this to be the most in depth. Since my new HP 2133 doesn’t have a CD drive, I found this site very useful.

Do you use Linux?

Use Vista to check how powerful your computer is

I still believe that XP is the best Windows operating system however my main laptop has Vista and my new HP 2133 laptop has vista installed too. Whilst my main laptop (Asus G1S) has a 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, my new portable laptop has a miserable 1.6GHz Via 7 processor. It really should have XP installed instead of Vista but unfortunately HP didn’t think so.

I’ve been reading a lot of tips and tutorials on Vista the last few days and I have learned a few tricks to improve performance. I’ll post these tips in a few days but today I want to talk about the rating system Vista has.

Vista is able to rate how powerful your system is. The rating is called the Windows Experience Index.

My main laptop has an index score of 4.7

Computer Performance

My new portable laptop has a measly score of 2.0. According to Microsoft this means

A computer with a base score of 1.0 or 2.0 usually has sufficient performance to do most general computing tasks, such as run office productivity applications and search the Internet. However, a computer with this base score is generally not powerful enough to run Windows Aero, or the advanced multimedia experiences that are available with Windows Vista.

The range goes from 1 to 5.9 so my main laptops score of 4.7 isn’t too bad. According to them

A computer with a base score of 4.0 or 5.0 is able to run all new features of Windows Vista with full functionality, and it is able to support high-end, graphics-intensive experiences, such as multiplayer and 3 D gaming and recording and playback of HDTV content. Computers with a base score of 5.0 were the highest performing computers available when Windows Vista was released.

If you use Vista you should check this out. To see your index all you need to do is open up your control panel (not classic view), choose ‘System & Maintenence’ and then ‘Performance Information & Tools’.

So what’s your score?

I finally got my new laptop for travelling

2 days ago I finally got my hands on a HP 2133.

HP 2133 Keyboard

I’ve been using it for a few days now and it’s exactly what I wanted. It’s really portable and the build quality is fantastic. Unfortunately, video playback is quite poor and it can be sluggish at times under Vista but it does everything I need it for. It handles photoshop pretty well too however most of the time I will just be using it for blogging and checking email.

You can check out my thoughts on the device at Electric Bandits using the link below :)

Photoshop Disasters

I came across a good site yesterday called Photoshop Disasters. The blog shows all the mistakes that leading magazines, newspapers and ad companies make when promoting a product.

Photoshop Disaster

50 years ago I imagine that it was only goverment agencies like the CIA who did photo editing but if you pick up any magazine nowadays it’s difficult to find a picture which hasn’t been cropped, changed or manipulated in some way. Which is why I enjoy this blog so much. It’s suprising some of the pictures which have slipped through the net and made it onto the front page.

Bill O’Reilly Goes Nuts

Lisa Bettany posted a great link today on Twitter. The video shows Bill O’Reilly going nuts at his staff years ago when the teleprompter wouldn’t work. Hilarious.

I could give you many reasons why I detest this man but I think Snoop Dogg explained it for me in this video :

Did Friends Reunited miss the boat?

A few years ago the website Friends Reunited became incredibly popular in the UK. Over the course of a few months traffic jumped to crazy figures. I remember everyone signing up around that time and people were using it and updating their profiles a lot. For those who don’t know, Friends Reunited is a website which was initially setup for people to meet old school friends. They later let you add your work details etc too.

One of the major limitations of the site was that in order to send someone a message you had to pay a yearly fee. Many did however most people I knew didn’t pay. FR were quite strict on this policy too and removed email addresses etc from profiles of people who were trying to get in contact with a friend without paying them.

I got an email from them the other day telling me about people who have joined up in the last month and I decided to logon to the site. One of the biggest changes they made recently was that they have made it free to send messages to other users. This is a move they obviously had to do due to the success of other social media sites but I do feel that they have missed the boat.

Too little too late

I have no doubt that friends reunited still gets a lot of traffic and still makes a lot of money however I think they waited too long to remove the fee for sending messages. A few years ago it was one of the only social media sites in the UK however since then it has many rivals. In the USA MySpace is very popular however in the UK people mainly use FaceBook and Bebo. I really can’t see why anyone would use FR on a regular basis given most people now contact via these other social medai sites.

What do you think? Do you think Friends Reunited would be more popular today if it had removed the fee to message each other a few years earlier?

* For the record, I’m not really a big fan of any social media site myself and get bored with them very quickly!

Peep Show just keeps getting better

I decided to have a quiet Friday night last night and didn’t go out. Instead, my friend came round and we spent most of the night playing Grand Theft Auto 4 on the PS3. As I predicted at the start of the week, it’s drained a lot of my time! :)

Of course, we interrupted playing the game to catch the first episode of the brand new 5th season of Peep Show. It was hilarious and saw Mark once again fuck up another chance with a girl he thought was the one (after one meeting).

Peep Show

British readers will no doubt be aware of the show but I’m not so sure it’s shown stateside. Basically, the show is about two guys in their late twenties. Jeremy is a musician who is coasting through life doing pretty much what he wants. Mark’s a business man who tries to be sensible but inevtibly messes things up all the time, usually due to Jeremy. The show is unique from other comedys as nearly all scenes are shown from the perspective of one of the characters.

Here’s a clip from the episode where Jeremy decides to drug Mark so that he doesn’t ruin his night. Superb!

Any other Peep Show fans out there?
