The Vulca S

The Vulca S

I came across this car on Wired today. I’m not usually one to browse car websites or get excited about the latest cars being released but this vehicle is just beautiful.

Built by Italian firm Faralli & Mazzanti, it boasts a top speed over 200mph, 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and a 5.8-liter V10 engine.

Forget driving it, I’d be happy just sitting in the car for an hour!!

Goodbye Encarta

Encarta

Looks like wikipedia has finally killed off Encarta, Microsofts long serving digital Encyclopedia.

I remember using Encarta a lot in the last few years of High School. Pre internet, it was a great place to find (borrow/steal) information for projects/essays that you had to complete, so I have fond memories of it. I even got a copy free with my first pentium pc.

But it’s no real surprise that Mircosoft are discontinuing the product due to how widely available information is online nowadays. Microsoft said as much :

Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past. As part of Microsoft’s goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources for today’s consumer, it has made the decision to exit the Encarta business

Anyone else remember using Encarta?

Playstation 2 drops to $99.99

Playstation 2

Sony today announced that the PlayStation 2 Will Be Available for Under $100. Although the PS2 is several years old, it is still a great system and there are dozens of A+ games available for it, most of which can be picked up on eBay at bargain prices.

I already have a PS2 but if I didn’t I’d be keen on picking one up at this price (I’m assuming the UK price will drop as well). If there’s anyone out there who finds the Xbox 360 or PS3 slightly above their price range, this would be a good option.

Wireless USB to VGA

Wireless USB to VGA

I’m a sucker for gadgets, even for ones that are more gimmicky than practical. Though I came across something today which I think a lot of people would find useful.

It’s a wireless USB to VGA adaptor. You can sit up to 30 feet away with your laptop or pc and stream a video, music or even just your desktop to your television.

Wireless USB to VGA

Here are the specs :

  • Connect to a VGA display wirelessly from your PC up to 30 ft. away across the room
  • Eliminate the long and unattractive cable runs
  • Extend your PC desktop or clone the same content to a remote display
  • Up to 720p video streaming from your desktop or laptop (max range 15 ft.)
  • Support resolutions up to UXGA (1600 x 1200 pixels) or WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050 pixels)
  • Easy host selection to switch to another PC* for different video content
  • Certified Wireless USB 1.0 compliant
  • WiMedia 1.0 MAC and 1.1 PHY compliant

Only problem is this device currently costs $229 USD, a bit expensive for most people. I’m sure the price will come down on this in the next year or so.

Though it would great to see this technology integrated into laptops and TV’s over the next 5 years i.e. allow laptops to send data wirelessly to televisions and develop televisions which can detect this data and display it. Perhaps even with HD quality?

Until then, we will need to keep those long ass cables hanging around.

A reminder to always back up your servers

Backup Your Server Offline

WebHostingTalk, probably the largest web hosting community on the web, was recently attacked by a group of malicious hackers and had their whole database (including backups) destroyed.

The hacker(s) was able to destroy the offsite backup, onsite backup and the main database. It’s a stark reminder how backing up your website is important but I also think it’s quite worrying. I mean, if the largest hosting community on the web cannot stop hackers destroying everything then what chance do small website owners like myself have.

Backup Your Server Offline

Smaller websites are perhaps slightly less likely to be attacked but there is still a chance it could happen. A few years ago my poker forums got attacked by Turkish hackers who found an exploit in a chat script which I had integrated with the site. They shut down the site, wrote ‘Fuck USA’ and linked to their hacker community. I just wish they spent a few minutes on my site to read my about page and realise that I’m from Scotland!!

I have my own server and a backup hard drive which backs up all my sites every night. However, I know I need to make offsite backups more. This is something I think most webmasters are guilty of not doing. I just get out the habit of doing it because the sheer volume of data my sites take up. It just isn’t practical to backup too often as it would literally take me a day of downloading to back all my sites up with my current connection.

I have already paid extra to have my own server backed up my hosting company but the attack on WHT shows that this clearly isn’t enough. I don’t mind paying a bit more for peace of mind, particularly when it comes to my livelihood.

When you make a living online, it’s important that you take steps to protect your online portfolio. Which is why I am considering looking into an online service which does offline backups. Chris Beasley recommends Mozy but I’m gonna have a look at some alternatives and check out some reviews etc before I make my decision.

I’ll let you know if I find an reliable affordable service for backing up files offline.

Street Fighter 4 Online

Street Fighter 4

One of the first things I did arriving home was purchase Street Fighter 4. I have been a Street Fighter fan since I was a kid. I first started playing Street Fighter 2 religiously with my friends at lunchtime during High School when I was about 11 or 12.

It proved to be great value for money as for 20 pence you could play for 20 minutes at least as we always got to the end bosses and more often than not, completed the game as well. A year or so later I was playing Street Fighter 2 on the Super Nintendo and soon after that I swapped about 5 games to get an imported version of Street Fighter 2 Turbo (It cost £75 from the market – Robbing Bastards!! haha). Since then I have purchased numerous versions of the game for other systems.

So I was really looking forward to Street Fighter 4. I’ve heard a few people saying they are disappointed with it but I actually think it’s a good game, except for one thing. The online part of the game sucks balls. This was the part of the game I was really looking forward to too.

Street Fighter 4

There are two main problems with it.

The first is a problem with connection speed. The game tells you to only play players with a green connection bar, which signifies a good connection speed. My mate Malky said to never play against someone with less than a green bar but after 4 days of owning the game I have still not seen anyone else with a gree bar.

I have only seen yellow bars, which signifies an average connection or more common, a red bar, which signifies a poor connection. A lot of problems occur because of this. Mainly, the game is unresponsive. Half the time you do the command to do a specific move it just doesn’t do it, which makes the game frustrating and close to being unplayable.

The second main problem is actually finding a game. There seems to be very few players on the game and the ones which are one, for want of a better word, are assholes! I realised this the other day. I was playing a guy the other day who kept just running away and doing fireballs. I soon realised why he was doing this. The guy had setup the game a 30 second one round game. He was clearly doing this just to get cheap wins and increase his online ranking.

I can’t understand people like that. People who are more interested increasing some pointless rank instead of actually playing the game. Am I getting too old for gaming or is every other gamer concerned about these ranks online. I finally got a good game going today in an unranked game. We were both Akuma and the guy was beating me 2-1. After some close games he increased this to 4-1. I then demolished him 2 games in a row with near perfects every round and when it was 4-3 he left the game.

Damn kids!

Super Nintoaster

Super Nintoaster

I’m a big fan of retro video games. I’m also a big fan of people who are good with electronics and have a little too much time on their hands.

So I was intrigued to see that someone has put a Super Nintendo inside a toaster.

Super Nintoaster

It’s quite impressive that the Nintoaster actually works. Wonder how much he would get for it on Ebay?

Here’s what the creator had to say about it :

You guessed it! A Super Nintendo crammed inside of a toaster.
Built from nothing more than a Super NES, a toaster, four different types of adhesives, magnets ripped from a broken hard drive, six orange LEDs, a bunch of resistors, plexiglass, and many many spare wires. Not too dissimilar from my previous toaster, only this time the temperature comtrol knob DOES serve a purpose!

If for some reason you feel the need to adjust the brightness of the orange LEDs, now you can. I’ll admit though, it does seem to take issue with my copy of Super Mario World 2. The game seems to randomly glitch and ultimately freeze at certain points, then lose my saved game. It could be my copy of the game, the length of wire used to relocate the cartridge slot or a combination of the two.

I’m not too concerned about it though because it was able to play every other game I tested in it flawlessly, including Super Metroid which I was able to play through from start to finish without issue.

Opera Turbo

Opera

Before switching to FireFox a year or so ago, I used Opera for years. It was so much faster and practical than anything else out at the time, especially when you are working on the backend of websites all day long.

The current stable release is 9.64 although you can download a preview version of Opera 10, their fourthcoming browser which has ‘Opera Turbo’.

I admit I don’t know how the technology works but according to them :

That’s why we’ve been working on Opera Turbo, a server-side optimization and compression technology that provides significant improvements in browsing speeds over limited-bandwidth connections by compressing network traffic. This does not only make you surf faster, but also lowers the cost of browsing when you are on a pay per usage plan.

I installed it today and it does seem a little faster than FireFox and Chrome, although there is a chance that I only believe this because I installed it right after reading about how quick it was….the power of suggestion!!!

I recommend downloading and trying it out :)
