My brother Darren asked if I had seen the AC Transit Bus Fight clip tonight. For those who haven’t seen it, here is a summary for you all.

Basically, a Vietnam Veteran named Tom is sitting on a bus talking about going to a funeral and needing to get his shoes shined. An African American guy across from him hears part of this and thinks that the comment was directed at him. I won’t spoil what happens next.

Original Clip

Good Summary

Interview With Tom

Interview With Michael

Apparently this happened after he left the bus

Hilarious Anime Remix

A summary from Ice Cubes Dad in Friday!

The above is just a few of the videos online about the fight. Search for AC Transit Bus online and you’ll see hundreds of them!

My thoughts? It’s not clear from the clip if Tom did say something racist or if the Michael just picked it up wrong. Though I think Tom did the right thing in the end. He walked away from the problem but when he was attacked he retaliated.

What do you think?

I was really surprised to read today that 3 Google Employees have been convicted in Italy because of a video which shows an autistic teenager being bullied. It goes without saying that no normal person wants to see something as sick as that…but what’s it got to do with Google staff?

They didn’t make the video, upload the video or even review it. They simply cannot review every video which is reviewed. Google did take the video down when someone reported it, so how the hell can they be convicted.

If this rule was passed around the world it would pretty mean the end of online video. I can assure you that there are thousands of sick and disgusting videos on Google, not to mention the racist comments which are listed there too. But do they expect every video to be reviewed before going online? Youtube gets millions of uploads a month, it just isn’t possible to do that.

And would anyone work for a video sharing site such as Youtube, Vimeo or DailyMotion if they knew they could get jailtime for some other asshole uploading a video? I know I wouldn’t.

Absolute madness!

FlippaI traded websites for years at the SitePoint Marketplace and have continued to use their new site Flippa once they moved most of their services there.

It remains the best place available to buy and sell websites. I’ve found it really difficult to sell domains there though you can sell pretty much any website there. I’ve been keeping an eye on Flippa recently for any decent websites to buy.

A few sales have caught my eye. A blackberry community was a steal at $5,000 but although I recently purchased a blackberry, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to write about it every week and think it would have been difficult to find good writers for the site.

KeyboardForums.com is also being sold just now for a few thousand, which is a decent price when you consider how good the domain name is. The design is really cool though that will be obsolete when you upgrade to Vbulletin 4. When you consider the price of getting a new design and getting a new owned license for the forums you need to spend about $1,000; and that’s before you even try to monetize a site which I believe will be difficult to monetize until it gets larger. So again, I decided not to bid.

The last site I was looking at was Codnation.net. I’m a huge Call of Duty fan so it would have been easy to run. I did bid up to $3,000 but I was reluctant to go any higher as it will be hard to make money from a site like that. Most of your regulars are going to be teenagers or adults who already have the game, so it’s difficult to push any products to them. It would be a good place to promote other websites you own though, which is why I wanted it. Though I’d rather spend cash on websites which are going to bring in money on a monthly basis.

Research, Research, Research

Unfortunately, like eBay, Flippa has loads of junk for sale. In fact, the majority of listings are junk. People are spending a few hours building a site and then listing it for sale. Others are waiting for an affiliate commission to go through and then making ridiculous claims that the site will make thousands per month (but they are willing to sell it just now for a few hundred). Most people in this game and can spot these cons a mile away but I’ve seen a few people being duped.

False information is also a big problem for Flippa. I think it would be good if people could report things which are blatantly false. For example, I see many people using freely available designs which have been downloaded and used on thousands of websites and then claim that the design is unique. And unless you do your research, you won’t know otherwise. In fact, even if you do you might not spot it. I bought a cheap forum for a few hundred bucks a few years ago because it has some activity and a decent design. It was only later that I found out it was a free design being used by many communities but I just couldn’t find the design elsewhere when I looked into it before bidding.

Traffic and revenue stats are also heavily inflated on the site. Though if you ask for evidence you should be able to avoid being ripped off.

However, there are still some bargains about. I’ve noticed that sellers initially make their reserves and buy it nows unrealistic but towards the end of the sale they drop their prices, particularly if the auction isn’t getting many bids.

I’m working on launching my new blog soon, which will focus on the WordPress platform. Therefore, I’m not too bothered if I pick up a good bargain or not just now. In fact, it’s maybe better if I don’t so that I can put all my energy into my new blog.

Though if I do pick anything up I’ll let you all know :)

I honestly thought this was just some silly internet clip when I found it. Though apparently this is the advertisement that Red House Furniture used to promote itself around North Carolina (USA).

Oh and before you go, remember to order a T-Shirt! :)

Some classic clips between Jack and Victor and Boaby from Still Game, probably the last decent comedy to come out of Scotland.

As I said last week, I won’t be using Google Buzz. If you use gmail, you may be interested to know that you can turn buzz on and off at the bottom of your Gmail account (in the footer links).

I switched mine off last week but turned it on today to see what I missed. It does seem that many people are enjoying using it, therefore I will probably be integrating Google Buzz in future blogs I develop. It’s still not for me though.

Below is Googles response to the privacy issues which were recently raised about Buzz.

Off to Dusseldorf

I’m off to Dusseldorf in Germany tomorrow for a few days for my mate Kevins stag do. The flight is at 6.30am, which means I need to get up at 3am. However, I doubt that the early time, nor the still poor pound to euro exchange rate, will stop us from having a good time.

I’ve been to Germany twice before, both times in Berlin. The capital is a beautiful city and a great place for a night out. I’m looking forward to seeing a different part of Germany and trying out a few new beers!

Though I must admit, I’m looking forward to having a normal weekend too as I had a stag do two weeks ago and I have another in the middle of March, not to mention all the weddings that go with it. Though I guess it’s better than sitting at home watching tv!

Prost!

I watched an abscure film tonight by David Dobkin called Clay Pigeons. This was the Wedding Crashers directors first film.

I was reading about the film was it’s a real low budget affair but it was produced by Ridley Scott and starred Vince Vaughan and Joaquin Phoenix. So I was reading about the Phoenix and came across an incident last February on David Letterman. You can check it out below. Apparently he was fine during the daytime but as you can see from this video, he was really out of it during the interview.

Google BuzzI’ve had the chance to play around with Google Buzz over the last few days. Forget about all the marketing talk by Google, Buzz is essentially FriendFeed/Twitter integrated into GMail. Which to me is a big plus because I use Gmail everyday anyway.

Buzz also integrates with Twitter well and allows you to post updates to both, but you can’t follow replies to both (as yet). Twitter fans will no doubt love Buzz. I did my best to like Twitter and tried to use it as I know it’s a good way to market websites. Though I find it time consuming and a bit of a pain in the ass to be honest.

When you work online you need to make sure you manage your time wisely as it’s incredibly easy to skive off and do other things. And for me, Twitter and Buzz both come into the skiving off category. Marketers are always telling you that Twitter is a great way to build relationships online. I personally prefer email. Seriously, how are you supposed to develop a relationship with someone who has thousands of followers. If you want to partner up with them on a new project then why not drop them an email and have a chat via msn messenger or skype?

I must admit I do skive off semi frequently on FaceBook but everyone I know there I know in real life.

Already I’ve noticed the same kind of people complaining on Buzz. I saw several people complain yesterday because others were not telling the world who they were via their Buzz profile, which means that they don’t know whether they should follow them or not. I’m of the opinion that if you don’t know them, then don’t bloody follow them!! One of the problems of Twitter/Buzz is the more people you follow, the more difficult it is to build any sort of relationship. You are in essence just shouting into the wind and hoping that someone shouts back. If everyone would keep the number of people they follow to under 100 it would work, but they don’t, which means when you do reply to someone it will likely be lost in one of a thousand replies back to them.

For these people it’s all about the numbers i.e. the number of people following them. And they’re right; because in order to market via social networking sites like Twitter and Buzz you need to have a lot of followers, and the easiest way to do that is to follow someone else and hope that they reciprocate.

So to summarise, Google Buzz seems pretty good and I am a big fan of them integrating it with the Gmail interface. However, my feelings towards using these kind of sites remain the same.

I do understand the benefits of using these networking sites for business (and that’s all I would be using it for because I keep in touch with real life friends via Facebook), but for me the cons greatly outweigh the pros. In order to get anything back you need to spend a lot of time networking and getting yourself known, time I would rather spend writing good articles, developing my sites and contacting people about potential projects and partnerships directly via email or messenger.

There’s only so many hours in the day, and you learn to appreciate that after working online for several years. Fair play to those who can manage their workload and spend hours every week posting on these sites, but I find it incredibly difficult to do both. And if I have anything relevant to say, I prefer to put it into an article.

I may occasionally leave a message on Buzz though; there’s certainly more chance of me posting there than Twitter seeing as it’s built right into Gmail. Bah humbug!!!

Kev

p.s. please don’t reply saying I don’t understand Twitter. I used to run a Twitter blog and read dozens of ebooks on the subject. I’ve also wrote lots of articles on promoting yourself via Twitter and tried out lots of free and paid services too. My issues are not with Twitter itself, it’s more to do with the time it takes to get anything back from it. Opportunity cost rules all.
