Slowly getting back into training

It’s been a long time since I spoke about my calf muscle so I thought I would give you an all an update.

It is over 7 and a half months since I pulled my calf muscle. In that time I have had a lot of set backs though recent developments have gave me some encouragement.

The Long Road To Recovery

I saw the Doctor when I got back from Thailand. He gave me what can only be considered terrible advice about my injury. I told him how I had tried to use the treadmill but couldn’t really go faster than 2.5mph before it was hurting. His solution was to give me a pain killing gel which I was to apply to my leg in order to go through this pain barrier.

In hindsight, I should have questioned this as a few days later I did what the doctor ordered and tried to run at 2.5mph again. The result: my muscle tightened up even more and I couldn’t do anything at the gym for a month or so.

He referred me to a physio, but it would be another 6 weeks or so until I saw one. I probably should have seen someone in private but since my leg was sore, I wasn’t doing any training so I assumed that there was little I could do.

The physio proved to be very knowledgeable. She explained that my calf muscle had torn and it was now really tight. She also told me that instead of having one long calf muscle like a regular person would have, I have calf muscle tissue, scar tissue and then calf muscle tissue. (and noticed an indent where the injury was too).

When I asked her about how this effects me long term she explained that I will always have a problem with this in some shape or form, i.e. my muscle will never be as strong as it was. Though she said that I would be able to get back to a level where I can train or even compete, which was great news.

Stretching is Key

She told me off a few times for some bad habits. For example, when I was sitting my right foot was always raised up so only the ball of the foot was on the ground. I natrually did this because my muscle had contracted. She advised me to keep my foot on the floor, which sounds easy but believe me, doing this for a week was incredibly painful.

She gave me a stretching routine to follow and after a few weeks, she advised that I didn’t have to see her again. She told me to just take things slowly and to keep stretching the muscle and if it flared up again, book an appointment.

After another week or so of daily stretching I went to a local football park and ran around for about a mile. The next door everything was sore : my calf was sore but so were my feet, quads, hamstrings etc. It had been 6 months since I had used these muscles so clearly they were weak. About 4 or 5 days later I went out for a run, running just under 3 miles in total. My fitness wasn’t too bad but again, my legs were sore at the end. Although my legs were hurting, I was encouraged that I could run this distance (albeit at an incredibly slow pace).

I went for another run a week later. However, I had to stop after a mile because my calf was so sore. A few days later I was down in London for my birthday (Celtic were playing in the Wembley Cup) and as a result of walking around so much, my calf was hurting like mad. At the end of the Saturday night I was limping, not a good development.

I realised at this point that running on hard surfaces might not be the best way to get back into training, though one of the reasons I was running was because the gym was closed for a month for renovations.

Developing the Muscle

When the gym opened back up I started using the cross trainer. I stretched before using it, stopped during it and stretched and made sure I stretched afterwards. A few weeks later and my calf is starting to feel a helluva lot stronger. It still tightens up after exercising so I still need to stretch a lot, but I have been really pleased with how it is progressing.

The new gym also has a punch bag so twice in the last week I have been able to do some light kicking and punching. Yesterday I managed about 30 minutes of kicking on the bag so today my calf and hamstrings are sore. I must have done too much to be this sore though I don’t think I have set my recovery back in any way.

Today I did an hour and a half of jujitsu with my mate Ali (who’s also my Taekwondo instructor). I was reluctant to do any grappling before incase I landed funny and aggravated my calf but it seems to be fine. So I’m going to start grappling every now and again.

Hopefully, within the next month I can go back to Taekwondo and do some light training. Once I’m back to normal I’d love to do some Muay Thai again a few times a week.

I need to take my time though and not rush it. It’s very easy to think that everything is back to normal and then mess things up. Although i need to exercise to develop my muscle, there’s a fine line between developing it and tearing it again. So I will have to be patient.

On a side note, because I didn’t train for months (or even walk anywhere), I’ve put on more than a stone since coming back from Thailand. I’ll be able to lose this very quickly if my calf allows me to continue to train. Fingers crossed.

Fat boy signing off!

I am Legend – Alternate Ending

Although many people were’nt huge fans of it, I really enjoyed Will Smiths I Am Legend when it was released two years ago. It was based on a book on the same name which was released in the 50s.

Like many book to film conversions, the screenplay differed from the book. In particular, the ending was changed for this version. If you have not seen the film and don’t want to have it ruined, please stop reading now :)

I am Legend

The film is set in the near future where most of the people of the world have died or contracted a disease which makes them like zombies. Will Smith is one of the last humans alive and wonders around New York city during the day time with his dog catching these zombies so that he can take them back to his house and do experiments on them in order to find a cure.

At night he padlocks all the doors in his house and waits until morning, as that is when the zombies come out. When is dog is caught by the zombies he goes out at night to find him and is saved by lady and her son. Unfortunately, she took him back to his home and the zombies find out where he lives. When nightfall arrives they arrive in their thousands and break into his home.

The end of the film sees him trapped in his basement behind a bullet proof type door. He sneaks the woman and child out through a secret door and when the zombies are ready to smash through he charges at them with a grenade and blows up dozens of them, simultaneously helping the woman and kid go free, who both end up finding unaffected humans up the coast of the US.

I am Legend

This film ending is not what actually happens in the book. In the book the main character Robert Neville realises that the zombies are not evil per say, they are simply part of the new race. Zombies are now at the top of the tree and he is the last human alive. He realises that he is their nightmare.

Basically, Robert thought that he was trying to save these ‘monsters’ but what he was actually doing was killing dozens of them every day and capturing others to use for testing. In the book, he befriends a zombie called Ruth who explains everything to him. He is imprisoned and sentenced to death but she takes pity on him and gives him a pill to make his death easier.

Before dying Robert realises that he is the last human alive and has a laugh to himself and says ‘A new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.’

They actually shot an ending similar to this for Will Smiths version but the HollyWood big wigs decided after a test screening that audiences wouldn’t like this. Thankfully, this ending was included in the I am Legend DVD. You can watch it below courtesy of FirstShowing.

I much preferred this alternate ending and I’m surprised that it wasn’t used. Over the years there have been many successful films which have added a twist at the end of the film (Usual Suspects, Sixth Sense, Unbreakable etc) so I don’t know what they didn’t take a chance with this one.

The ‘proper’ ending highlights that the zombies were just trying to get one of their own back and showed that Will Smith was actually the menace, which I think is a great twist and would make the film enjoyable with a 2nd or 3rd viewing. However, the ending they used means the film is a standard hack and slash zombie type film. I did still enjoy the film but think that they missed out on making this film a lot better.

Have a look at the alternate ending above and let me know what you think.

Companies are sneaky with their terms and conditions

It’s no surprise to many of you that companies are incredibly sneaky with what they put in their terms and conditions. They commonly advertise something for free and then put a small asterisk (*) at the end. The asterisk refers to a note at the bottom of the page which is almost always unreadable and usually explains that the offer isn’t technically free and that to get the product to free you need to sign over the deeds of your house!

Last week I got my own back though. Orange mobile decided to increase the rate of their 087 call prices and internet browsing rates. However, by doing so they were changing the terms and conditions which meant that I was within my rights to cancel the contract, which I obviously did because I had 4-5 months left on it.

After a day or so looking at phones, I decided on the HTC Hero, which is being sold in the UK via T-Mobile as the G2 Touch (Orange actually have it as well but their deal sucks).

HTC Hero

I was checking the terms and conditions today about the contract and the cost of calls etc. And it hit home how sneaky companies are with their terms and conditions are. They always quote terms and conditions when something is wrong and you want a refund, better service or improved contract but they do their utmost to make sure that people don’t read their terms and conditions.

Have a look at the sales page for the G2 :
G2 Touch

Notice how clear everything is. The colourful image, the large font, the use of lists to present information simply and clearly to the potential customer. As a blogger, I have read lots of articles about this. It allows the reader to digest the information more easily and presents the facts in a way which which is easier for the brain to remember.

Compare this to their terms and conditions page below. The font is incredibly small and there are no paragraph breaks whatsoever. This makes it not only incredibly difficult to read, it also makes it very difficult for the human brain to digest the information because the text is not broken down into different segments.
T-Mobile Flext Terms & Conditions

The problem in the UK is that these techniques are perfectly legal. It’s not lying to the customer but these methods hardly present all the information they must know in an honest way.

The comments left on the orange cancellation article highlight that customer service reps are happy to lie to customers anyways. Many people reported Orange reps saying that they must send their phone back if they cancel their contract, even though their own terms and conditions state that the phone is not part of the contract (it is in effect, a gift to entice you to sign the contract).

Word of warning to all of you : Take the time to read the terms and conditions when you sign up to any monthly contract. I know it’s a real pain in the ass but it could save you a lot of hassle in the future. :)

Why did Neo have hair when he left the Matrix?

Me and my friends are big movie buffs. We sometimes have long pointless discussions about mistakes and holes in a films plot. My friend Joe was telling me today about the discussion he had with my other mate Div about The Usual Suspects, one of the best films in the last 20 years.

They wondered what the point of the film was. If you haven’t seen the film then please stop reading as what I say here will ruin it for you (you should really go and see it).

Their argument was this. Keyser soze got everyone together so that he could kill someone who identified him. First of all, if he was so rich, why didn’t he just send in 100 bad guys to blow the boat up and kill everyone. More importantly, what was the point in his method. If he went to all that effort to kill one person who knew his face, why was did he sit in the police station for hours talking to the police investigator. So basically, in order to kill one person who knew his face, he exposed his face to half the FBI!

Neos Hair

I watched The Matrix again recently. A fantastic film was was followed by two average sequels. One thing I noticed was Neo’s hair. Answer me this : If he didn’t have hair when he was hooked up to the matrix, why did it start growing when he was unplugged? Did he find the cure for baldness?

Where is Neo's hair?
Anyone know what direction the nearest Wig store is?

Now, I am open to the argument that the machines genetically modified humans in some way for their own benefit so perhaps they removed hair from all humans. However, if they did do this, Neo would continue to have no hair when he was unplugged. So why did his hair start growing all of a sudden? The laws of evolution apply to him as well!

Surely one of the dozens of high execs who read the screenplay or saw a first draft of the movie would have questioned this?

Ever had a bad flight?

Thai plane crashI was reading today about the plane crash at Koh Samui airport in thailand. It was a Bangkok Airways flight and the pilot was unfortunately killed whilst several others were injured.

I flew with Bangkok Airways in and out of Koh Samui earlier this year. Infact, I found out about the crash after receiving this email from them:

Dear MR. Kevin Muldoon,
Subject Letter of condolence

Due to the recent accident on Bangkok Airways’ flight PG 266 at Samui Airport on August 4th,
I, on behalf of Bangkok Airways, would like to express my sympathy towards our passengers
and crew members who have been affected from this accident. We have put all our efforts
to assist all our passengers during this unfortunate event.

Please be informed that today, Samui Airport reopened for flight operation with the first departure
on PG 100 leaving Samui at 14.00 hrs and arriving at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 15.00 hrs.
The first departure from Suvarnabhumi Airport is PG 153 at 14.00 hrs with an arrival in Samui at
15.00 hrs. For more flight information, please visit our website (www.bangkokair.com).

Lastly, Bangkok Airways’ management would like to reassure that we continue to take safety
as priority in all aspects of our operations for your confidence every time you fly with us.

Sincerely yours,

Captain Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth
President
Bangkok Airways

Although I was shocked to hear the news today, to be honest, I wasn’t surprised. Bangkok Airways are a great airline. Their very cheap yet their service would put most UK Airlines to shame (Ryanair/Easyjet etc). However, the weather there can be very turbulent.

I flew between Phuket and Koh Samui on a similar flight in 2007 with my friends Dave and Michael. Before then I would have considered myself a good flyer, having flew over a hundred times over the last 5 or 6 years, but that flight really shook me up. The flight was only about 40-45 minutes long but it was violently turbulent the whole time as we were going through a thunderstorm. It kept bumping up and down and more than once I grabbed onto the side of my chair.

I remember talking about afterwards and my mate Dave said that he didn’t enjoy it either but felt a bit better when he saw me!! I had a flight to Singapore about a week later and another to Melbourne a few days after that so I just had to grin and bear it. I’m not so bad with flying again and the aftershock of that flight seems to have worn off a bit though I still hate turbulence now (but it would never stop me travelling). So I can only imagine what it would be like for the people on that flight.

Anyone else had a really bad flight which made them uneasy with flying or put them off from flying again altogether?
