So far it’s been a decent alternative, plus the WP plugin made the transition fairly simple and convenient.

Thanks for this article. I was just wondering if there’s anything newer you’d recommend since writing it. I use Blogger’s ‘Follow by email’ facility (with Feedburner), but it seems to have stopped working for my site and trying to figure out why is massively complicated for a non-techy person like me!

Ideally I’d like something that gives me stats, but that I don’t need to pay for!

They even have 2 posts on their blog about statistics issues. On the other hand FeedPress is a very good service, but il lacks some email customization options.
