Help Me Name the Tagline of My Upcoming Book

I’m pleased to announce that the first draft of my upcoming book “The Art of Freelance Blogging” has been finished. Over the next week I will be editing and proofreading the book to ensure it’s of a very high quality. I will then advise you all when you can download it for free. It’s around 250 pages long so I’m sure you’ll love it :)

My full working title for the book is “The Art of Freelance Blogging: Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger”. What do you think of the tagline “Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger”.

I think it’s good however I’m not sure if it’s too straight forward. Perhaps something like “How to Make Thousands of Dollars By Blogging for Others” would be better

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the tagline. Please leave feedback/suggestions in the comment area if you have time. It would really help me out :)

Also, a few people have said they would like to help me with proofreading the book. If you would like to help out, please send me an email :)

Kevin

  1. I personally prefer the straight to the point title! The other one looks too much like you are trying to sell me something (over and above the book).

That is not to say that the title I prefer would be downloaded (or sold) more!

    Give me 12 hours…….

    • Yeah. I think ‘Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger’ represents the book better as it’s a no-bs guide to blogging

I’m aware that many people are looking to make money from blogging. I’m also aware how popular making money online type books are. It’s difficult trying to get a title that will draw in everyone.

  2. The “thousands of dollars” one just makes it sound cheap and greasy. I like your original tagline much better.

  3. I love “Practical Advice From a Professional Blogger” . I will like to add, “Money Magnet Freelance Blogging” (subtitle: advice for beginners and experts)

  4. Here are some more suggestions from readers (sent via email):

    * The Ultimate Guide by a Professional Blogger.

    * Helpful Pointers from a Professional Blogger

    * Step by Step guide to blogging

    * Made for bloggers, by a blogger

  5. “Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger” stick with this one Kevin it’s professional and too the point.

Can’t wait to read your next book “Cheap and Greasy” lol :-)

  6. Yes, “Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger” looks much better and professional.

    Looking forward to reading it.

  7. I’d go for the “practical advice” style of putting things too. But I also like the concise “How to…” Plus your lifestyle as a traveler is *very* attractive and show the benefits only a blogger has. So what about “How to blog your way around the world” (I guess that has been done before) or “How to blog professionally from Everywhere.”

Or really concise: “Profession: Blogger” I guess I’d like that.

Great going. I travel(ed) myself [kamielchoi.blogspot.com] though am now based in Korea with my newly started family :) I got into travel blogging while traveling South America myself, love the vibes… though I then “moved on” and my interest now is how the internet enables us to sustain ourselves outside of the (exploiting, destructive, …) system. So I’m blogging (and acting) on that now. Guess I just wanted to ask you where you stand ideologically, to say a dirty word. Is it ultimately just about making enough dough to get going, or do you envision some kind of world in which we Bloggers are examples of sustainable living?

    • Hi Kamiel,

You’re making me jealous. I’d love to go to Korea. My friend went 10 years ago and loved it. He’s talking about going back this year or next year.

I’m keen to go back to Japan too so I’d love to combine a trip back to Japan with trips to China and Korea too. Plus, from a practical point of view, Korea is very developed. Fast internet and the latest gadgets will keep me happy there!

This book has nothing to do with travelling though. It’s applicable to everyone. Perhaps the fact I travel around the world whilst blogging is testament to the fact that it can be done…though the same could be said of any online job (I realise having an angle for a book is a good thing). I do briefly mention in the book that blogging has allowed me to travel the world.

      :)

      Kevin

      • Hi Kevin,

Reading this comment only now thru WP.COM; if you need any insider tips on Korea, I’m here.

I browsed skyscanner.net the other day and was all fired up about the cheap South Asia travel.. Sri Lanka, Phillippines, Nepal.. strange that I’ve never been there before and call myself a real traveler :)

Most UK/US/OZ people come to Korea to cash in. You can find tons of English teaching jobs on Seoul craiglist, but of course for us independents it’s not the money but the visa (tourists can stay here 3 months max) so I have to go back and forth to Japan every 90 days, even though I fathered a child here :)

I’m working here in 24-hour cafés. The absence of a closing time is pretty cool :)

        Cheers!

        Kamiel

        • I’d love to go to Korea. My friends went 10 years ago and said it was amazing. I’ve trained Taekwondo for many years too, which is another reason I’d love to go.

It’s a shame you only get 3 months. You’d think that if you had a child there, you would be granted a conditional visa.

          Kevin

  8. I feel that neither tagline is quite adequate for you. Perhaps a different approach, maybe coming from the fact that you are living the lifestyle you write about? Maybe something along the lines of “Creating the life you want through helping (or ‘writing for’) others.”

You’ve always seemed more about being authentic and just living out your dream through your writing talents than about how to make thousands of dollars online, or just giving practical advice. You have an honest and personal element to what you do that many other bloggers or content marketers don’t.

There’s a third alternative here and I hope you find it :-)

    • Great to hear from you again Mario. How’s things going with your blog?

I’ve not written the book from the angle of changing your life. I have emphasised the benefits of blogging throughout the book but it’s not been written in a ‘get rich quick’ or ‘change your life’ type way. I’m kind of torn because I feel like I should use a keyword such as money in the tagline but I want to emphasise that it’s a no-nonsense guide.

Perhaps something more straight forward like : “A Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Professional Blogger” is better.

      Kevin

      • Things are slowly yet surely progressing, thanks my friend! :-)

AH, I see. Well from that angle, yes going more straight forward would be better I believe. However, your title is emphasizing the art aspect, so maybe the tagline should combine the use of creativity/art AND practical wisdom to blog professionally. In the book, are you emphasizing using creativity in writing as well, or is it more about steps and tools?

Rethinking it, I do like the first tagline you came up with, “Practical Advice From A Professional Blogger”. Perhaps adding something of the art side or creativity might help amplify the book title as well (if creative writing is a key point in it):

“Practical Advice For Creative Professional Blogging”

Honestly though, if you having a difficult deciding what the tagline should be, I believe the first one works very well.

  9. “Cheap & Greasy.” That is funny. Is it a prequel to “Down & Dirty?” :-D

Congratulations on the book’s progress. Well done.

Agreed, hands down, that the winner of the two is “Practical Advice from a Professional Blogger.”

Is that the final cover we see on here? If so, perhaps you could give us a mock-up cover showing the tagline on it?

The look of the cover is very important, and if the above tagline does not flow on the cover, then maybe you might want to go with something different, or a different layout.

What keywords are used in taglines and titles of similar, best sellers on Amazon?

That is something to consider, as well as looking at the covers of the same books.

Here is a link to a list on there. I chose Web Marketing from the left. One would think there would be a dedicated category on here for blogging.

    http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Kindle-Store-Web-Marketing/zgbs/digital-text/156152011/ref=zg_bs_nav_kstore_4_156116011

Here are search results when I typed in “blogging advice,” without the quotes.

It is a short list, but it could be refined, of course.

I did not check the rankings of these books, so I do not know where they stand, but it does give you an idea of the niche here:

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st?bbn=133141011&keywords=blogging+advice&qid=1360684235&rh=n%3A133140011%2Ck%3Ablogging+advice%2Cn%3A!133141011%2Cn%3A154606011&sort=relevancerank

    Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the kind offer of letting us get the new book for free.

    Best,
    K.

    • Hey K,

      I appreciate the feedback.

The book cover was designed in December. I spent a long time working on the design with the cover designer. We both wanted something simple yet beautiful. Many great book covers have a lot of objects and text in them but we wanted something with less noise so chose to not add the tagline to it. I think it’s the right decision.

I can always change the book cover at a later date if necessary but I’m quite happy with the outcome of this one.

      Kevin

      • Hi Kevin,

In reading again my comment here, I can see how you might have thought that I was being critical of your book cover, but I certainly was not.

My apologies for any confusion. :-(

What I was talking about was if you were going to put the tagline on the cover, and it didn’t flow for you there that you then might want to rearrange it on the cover.

Sending you the links was for getting ideas if you wanted to move the tagline around on the cover, and if you wanted to make any new additions (such as keywords) to the tagline.

I am with you on a clean, simple cover.

Right away, I noticed how the colors in freelance and blogging complement the colors in the feather, making all of it pop.

It is also easy on the eyes, and most importantly, eye-catching.

        Best,
        K.K.

        • No I never thought you were criticising the cover at all (and it’s ok if you do). I realise how important the cover is so I welcome feedback however for this project I don’t want a tagline. My next book will definitely have the tagline on the cover.
          :) :)

          Kevin

  10. The book is now finished. Will hopefully be released by the weekend.

    I’m now swaying towards:

The Complete Guide to Making Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger

    • Awesome Kevin! Looking forward to reading it.

Out of curiosity, have you asked other people who may not already be experienced with blogging what they think of a tagline? Granted some of you intended audience is right here following your site. I was just wondering if you got any feedback from other sources and what they have said?

IMO, it may be worth trying to tighten it up a little more if possible, however you do have a good chunk of key info there so it doesn’t seem necessary to make.

Maybe: “How To Earn Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger”

I prefer tighter, concise phrases if possible. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with longer taglines.

      • Hi Mario,

No I’ve not asked any non-bloggers. Most of my friends who don’t know much about working online don’t really know what a blog is to be honest.

“How to” is a term I am also considering. I though that “complete” was a good term to use as it emphasises that the book covers everything.

I’ve been checking out lots of books on Amazon. Many have long taglines, many have short ones, some have none at all.

To be honest, I do like the idea of just keeping the book as “The Art of Freelance Blogging” and nothing more….however I am also aware that it’s in my benefit to put more keywords in the title of the book as it will help show my book in more search results.

        Mmmmm. You are right though…..

“The Complete Guide to Making Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger” (14 Words)

        vs

“How To Earn Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger” (12 Words)

2 Words doesn’t sound like much….but you may be right….it could be better to make the tagline shorter. Particularly as the full time is longer too.

        e.g.

“The Art of Freelance Blogging: The Complete Guide to Making Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger” (19 Words)

        vs

“The Art of Freelance Blogging: How To Earn Thousands of Dollars Every Month as a Professional Blogger” (17 Words)

Though there are many books there with many more words packed into the book title.

        Appreciate the feedback :)

        Kevin

  11. How about this one, which is a compilation of others here?

“The Art of Freelance Blogging: A Practical Guide To Making Thousands Per Month”

If preferred, you could use “Earning” instead of “Making,” and use “A,” or “Every,” instead of “Per.”

  12. That does sound better.
